Homemade Hummus – A Family Favorite

Today I’m sharing a favorite dip or side that I like to make to serve in my home. It’s also a great item to pack in your lunch or for a picnic. Let’s get started making homemade hummus.

How to Make Homemade Hummus

To make homemade hummus you will need a few simple ingredients.

Here’s the ingredients that you will need to gather to complete this recipe:

  • 3 cups chickpeas (also known as garbanzo beans)
  • 1/3 cup tahini
  • 1/4 cup of water or aquafaba (juice from chickpeas can)
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika (plus a bit extra for garnish)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil (more if needed for desired consistency)
  • juice of one lemon
  • salt to taste


Pour chickpeas, tahini, water or aquafaba into a blender. Blend until chickpeas are mostly smooth with no or few visible lumps.

Add cumin, a touch of salt, paprika, olive oil and juice of one whole lemon to blender.

Blend until hummus mixture is smooth and creamy. At this point you can adjust the thickness of your hummus by adding additional olive oil if you would like.

This recipe will store in an airtight container in your fridge for up to one week – although it usually doesn’t last that long.

Enjoy it with fresh vegetables, chips or as a side on your salad.
